Great formula, bad taste
Love the formula as it fits perfectly with my hay analysis with the right amount of zinc, copper and selenium and no iron, but neither of my horses will eat it, even the one who eats everything in sight. Consequently I can't add a large amount of alfalfa pellets to the U-Balance because he's over weight. The other horse is a senior who needs more calories so he gets a large amount of alfalfa pellets and Haystack Low Low and that's the only way he'll eat the U-Balance. I wish it was made more palatable. I ordered Uckele Sport Horse Grass supplement, which has a different base, so hopefully they'll eat it, but it has about half the zinc and copper so I'll have to add individual supplements, which I don't want to do.

Love this supplement but it's so expensive!
Great product to ensure correctly balanced supplements! My horse has been on U Balance Foundation for about 18 months. The smell is a bit strong, but my horse is willing to eat it with a small scoop of hay pellets. My only complaint is that when Smartpak took over distribution in Sept 2023, they increased the already expensive price by another $10. I might change to something else due to the high cost.

Wonderful product!
I took Dr Kellons NRC plus online nutrition course, and was mixing my own supplements, using Uckele single ingredients. I noticed a HUGE, positive change in my horses. I am a breeder, and was having issues with getting wobblers, when using commercial feeds. Balancing my minerals is giving my horses everything they need to avoid that. Mixing minerals is expensive. So is U balance foundation, but it's worth using, for sure.
I started working too much to have time to spend a half a day making individual containers of powdered supplements, so I decided to try U balance foundation, because it contains almost exactly what I was having to mix myself, plus it has a lot of what my horses need, that I cant get as individual ingredients. Or if I could get everything in the U balance foundation, it would be even more expensive, than just buying this pre mixed product. I also figured that I could feed just this pelleted product to my big, fat insulin resistant horse, without a carrier.
It took a little while to get my horses to eat it. They wouldn't eat it in plain beet pulp at all. I tried mixing beet pulp and alfalfa pellets. But my horses wont eat those 2 things mixed together, even without supplements.
So I ditched the beet pulp, and just soften some alfalfa pellets as a carrier. They love it! I was able to slowly decrease the alfalfa pellets, and after a couple months, my IR horse would eat it all by itself, or with a quarter cup of dry ground flax. That looks yucky to me, but she thinks it's wonderful.
All of my horses will eat it plain now. They think its a treat. They come galloping up to the barn, if they think they are going to get their u balance.
I have been using this for a year now and I am very happy! Its expensive, but it has more of what my horses need, than I can mix for myself, and ends up being a little cheaper. It's definitely cheaper than feeding commercial feeds, and I don't worry about it causing wobblers disease.
1 1/2 scoops is the perfect dose to balance it with my hay. I do add B complex, biotin, a custom amount of magnesium, and natural vitamin E.
Very happy breeder here!

I think it's great, horse thinks it's not tasty
I chose U-balance foundation because of the quality ingredients and appropriate vitamin and mineral levels, the only issue is my horse does NOT like the taste and smell. I've been trying to find ways to make it more palatable, it would be helpful if Uckele added a flavor to help with this or sold it in a small trial size. Overall I'm happy with the product and am going to keep working on building my horses tolerance to the new taste.

I have used this product
I have used this product for years, with varying success as far as palatability goes. The awful smell was quite offputting to horses. This last pail was a leap forward in that regard. When I opened it, the awful smell did not hit me and they ate it right down without the sugar free syrup I had to previously use to get it down them. Hooray!! I think you have finally conquered the smell issue on this product! If you could get the pricing down, more people could use it.

supplement checks all the blocks except I can't get it into my horse
My horse won't touch this supplement even buried in a pound and a half of soaked beet pulp. when it's not stirred in, he eats around it, when it is stirred in he rejects the whole meal. I'm bummed because I have looked long and hard for a supplement like this. I'm going to keep trying until I use up the tub but I'm not holding out much hope for my picky eater.

My normally unfussy eater won't touch it.
I was surprised that my normally unfussy mare has a problem with eating this. I have tried adding shredded carrots, apples, molasses (which defeats the purpose of feeding this) wetting her food. It does have an unpleasant smell. I guess the taste isn't so pleasant either. I wish it would have been palatable.

U Balance
Recommended by ECIR group for IR horse. Ingredients seem good...time will tell. Thought it's a bit pricey, though.

U-Foundation
Uckele has ration balancers for a range of hays with different mineral profiles. I have been lucky to find a steady supply of orchard hay - green, soft and with perfect balance of major minerals. However, the orchard has very high iron and manganese and typically low copper and zinc. U-Balance with no iron, minimal manganese is a perfect match. A huge bonus is that it has lots of other great stuff: lysine, salt, iodine, Vit E, enzymes to name just a few. BTW - to get balanced minerals, I only need to feed 1 scoop of U-Foundation. As others have commented, U-F has a strong smell and possibly a strong flavor. My trick has been to feed U-Foundation with granular Omega 4:1. My horse gobbles it down.
