Fly Control in Barn - Stopping Bugs Before They Start
Updated June 2, 2023
Fly Stoppers are an environmentally friendly option for fly control in barns and will make your barn a no-fly zone this summer. Learn how and when to use Fly Stoppers this bug season by watching this video!
What are Fly Stoppers?
Similar to Fly Predators, Fly Stoppers are tiny, beneficial bugs. They stop adult pest flies from developing by feeding upon and breeding within the pupal stages of manure-breeding flies, making them an ideal choice for environmentally friendly fly control in stables.
Fly Stoppers come in a bag with sawdust mixed with what looks like brown rice. Once hatching begins, you'll also see the Fly Stoppers themselves. They'll look like tiny little black crawling insects, similar to the size of a gnat.
When to Use Fly Stoppers
The hatching can take up to 10 days, but you can expedite it by storing them in a bag on top of the fridge or water heater. Once hatching starts, it'll go at a rapid pace. Even if you see a few bugs moving around, you want to release them immediately.
The best time to release your Fly Stoppers for fly control is at dusk or dawn when there's less light. They will do better with cooler temperatures. It's also when they're less likely to be disturbed by predators such as birds or ants.
Picking the Right Location
For the best fly control in your barn, release the Fly Stoppers in breeding hot spots, such as manure piles. Other locations you'll want to remember are along fence lines where horses eat, along stall walls, along the barn wall, and in standing water.
In or near these breeding hot spots, you'll want to make a small hole with a stick or the heel of your boot; pour a teaspoon to a small handful-size of the Stoppers in the hole, and then cover it lightly with dirt or straw. Apply your Fly Stoppers to as many locations as possible.
How Frequently Should You Use Fly Soppers?
You'll want to release your Fly Stoppers every three to four weeks for barn fly control. We recommend ordering on auto-ship to keep your stable a no-fly zone all summer long and save 5% with free ground shipping every month!
