Researched Hindgut Support

SmartPak’s ColiCare™ Eligible Supplements contain a specialized ingredient to support hindgut health, DVEquine™ Postbiotic. We asked the scientists at DVEquine™ Postbiotic to show us how their Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast) and its unique microbial fermentation products work with the other active ingredients in our products to support the cecum and colon of the horse.

Study Methods

First, hay was pre-digested as it would be in the stomach before reaching the large intestine. Next, fresh manure was added to the hay as a source of live microorganisms. This mixture served as the base, or control. Finally, each supplement was added to a separate mixture so that its individual effect on volatile fatty acid (VFA) production could be measured. VFAs are the main product of fermentation in the horse and indicate a healthy and well-functioning hindgut.

Study Results

• All three SmartPak™ supplements produced higher VFA levels compared to the control
• SmartGI Ultra Pellets resulted in the highest VFA levels
