The Importance of Eye Health
I know I don’t have to tell you how important eye health is to both you and your horse! While I never would’ve wished for eye issues to have happened with any of my ponies—they did—and I am fortunate that my mare, especially, has adapted well to her new normal.
My sweet gal, Bailey, was diagnosed with Equine Recurrent Uveitis back in 2010 in her left eye, when she was just 9 years old. She has always had the Paso Fino “brio” (their “spirit” or “fire”), but she started spooking more on the ground than was normal and was hesitant in many ways under saddle. Her head would tilt, her feet would plant, and she did her darndest trying to discern what was happening on her left side, the side that we learned was losing vision.
We treated her eye for 5 years but never did figure out the root cause. Hand-in-hand with several veterinarians, we all worked at doing what we could to save Bailey’s vision. You can bet I would’ve started her on SmartUV-Eye™ Pellets if it were available at the time! Unfortunately, it eventually became apparent that her vision was completely lost and her eye began to recede. The best choice became to enucleate it and I was so blessed with an amazing veterinarian who was able to do so and oversee her follow-up care.
Adjusting and (Calmer) Steps Forward
Over the years, my gal has adjusted extremely well and I am truly grateful that her lack of eyesight has not inhibited her fun, sweet, and fiery spirit.
While UV fly masks are a must during time in the pasture and a watchful eye (no pun intended) is needed for the remaining eye, I am always wanting to do more. SmartUV-Eye has been the supplement I had been wishing for over 15 years!
